Paperback Notebook - Marais
Papersmiths
The notebook contains 100gsm smooth, fountain pen friendly paper stock with minimal show through. It's suitable for use with highlighters, rollerballs, markers, brush pens, ballpoints and ink pens, as well as graphite and coloured pencils. We've tested numerous markers including Tombow (Dual Brush, Twin Tone, Fudenosuke), Faber-Castell Pitt, Pentel Sign and Brush Pens, 20+ black brush pens and various drawing pens. We were able to use both sides of every sheet. Tougher alcohol based markers will show through more easily, for example the Windsor and Newton Promarker.
We’ve used lay flat binding so the notebook opens without forcing the spine. This binding method backlines the inner pages within the spine, leaving them free to move. The cover is bound on with front and rear hinges only.
The cover is subtly blind embossed with ‘Papersmiths’ on the back and a satisfying thumb print sized monogram to the front.
Printed and bound in Buckinghamshire, United Kingdom by a fourth generation, family run binder.

Favourite ever notebooks, gorgeous colours and excellent quality for my fountain pen obsession! Used them for years for my morning pages and can’t wait to buy the A6 size.
I really love my notebook and use it almost daily at work. The only sad thing is that not much over halfway through and the spinier binding has come away from the pages so the cover isn’t fully attached. The paper quality is lovely and I really like being able to chose dots instead of lines.
How a Papersmiths notebook comes together
We explore colour
Every notebook starts with a hunt for the perfect hue - testing swatches against fountain pen ink, daylight, and each other, until something feels unmistakably Papersmiths.
We Test Everything
From paper weight to ink show-through, every stock is road-tested by hand before it earns a place in our collection.
Thoughtfully Bound
Bound by hand at a century-old British bindery, finished with details meant to be noticed - and kept long after the final page is filled.
Trusted Stationer of 13+ years
Papersmiths started with a single shelf of stationery in a Bristol design studio. A decade on, we still choose every piece the same way - for its story, its tactility, and the way it makes you want to sit down and write something. Visit us in Chelsea or Brighton, or shop the collection we've spent years designing and refining.
