2 pocket sized pens in metallic on a coral pink notebook

Designed by Papersmiths: The Pocket Pen

A pen, reduced to its most precise form. The Pocket Pen is a micro-sized retractable ballpoint developed with our Japanese partners for its balance, engineering and exacting scale - a finely made writing tool that lives quietly in your pocket until you need it.

The starting point for the Pocket Pen was precision.

When we were working on the Pocket Pencil, I knew I wanted a pen to sit alongside it - something equally compact, but with a different feel. Where the pencil is soft and natural, this needed to be clean, metallic and exact.

We spent time selecting and refining with our Japanese partners, so it feels considered in the hand despite its size. Small enough to disappear into a pocket or notebook band, but still satisfying and controlled when you write.

The dual-action mechanism is the most satisfying detail. A push at the end brings the tip out, and a side push tucks it away again - keeping the silhouette clean and the action precise.

Design notes from the Founder.

Materially, it’s all about lightness and control: aluminium for the body, steel for precision at the tip. There’s a soft sheen to it that I love - something almost jewellery-like in the way it catches the light amongst your everyday things.

It’s still a pen. Simple, useful, nothing over-designed. Just carefully chosen, refined and made well.

I love the contrast of the materials with the Pocket Pencil. Two small tools, each doing their own thing.
